The National Resistance Movement faithful in Kiboga are seething over a decision by the party's vice chairman to campaign for independent candidates in the district over the weekend. Moses Kigongo, the NRM vice chairman, addressed a mammoth rally in Kyetume trading center on Saturday. In addition to rallying votes for President Yoweri Museveni, he beat the drum for Siraje Nkugwa Kizito and Rose Zimulinda, two candidates who were beaten in the NRM primaries last year. Nkugwa, the incumbent Kiboga LC5 chairman, lost the primaries to Israel Yiga, one of his district counselors. Rose Zimulinda was defeated in the NRM elections for a Kiboga women's parliamentary representative by the State Minister for Micro Finance, Ruth Nankabirwa. During his campaign speech, Moses Kigongo accused Nankabirwa of causing confusion in the NRM primaries. He said she was personally responsible for any irregularities in the voting process and so he would not support her re-election bid. Ruth Nankabirwa vehemently opposed any proposal to cancel the results of the primaries and to hold a fresh vote. According to Kigongo, this was suspicious behavior. He told people present not to re-elect Nankabirwa or her ally, the LC5 chairman. Nankabirwa has not taken the accusations lying down. She says Kigongo has been witch hunting her for several years because she has blocked his corrupt business deals in Kiboga and Kyankwanzi districts. The State Minister claims that if it were not for Kigongo's meddling, Kiboga wouldn't be as poor as it is today. The NRM Kiboga secretary general, Madalasati Lubega, says party supporters were angered by Moses Kigongo's statements. He says they will petition Museveni, as chairman of the party, to take action against Kigongo for attempting to destabilize NRM support in Kiboga. ###
