Amodoi was on Wednesday charged with two counts of causing malicious damage to government property and conspiracy to commit a felony.

Amodoi was arrested by the police on Good Friday from Awere Bridge in Pader district from where he was allegedly attempting to steal mercury. The MP who has since been held at Pader Central Police Station appeared at Pader Grade One Magistrate’s court but pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The state however says it has three witnesses who will testify against the MP and two of his co-accused.

The Grade One Magistrate Edward Okot adjourned the case that had gone past 5pm to today and subsequently remanded MP Amodoi to Kineni government prison.

Amodoi is a former soldier who contested and won the Toroma County parliamentary seat on independent ticket.

His profile on the parliamentary website indicates that he formerly served under the presidential protection unit after being commissioned as a cadet.

His long stay in police custody became an issue in Parliament on Wednesday forcing Speaker Rebecca Kadaga to order the Ministry of Internal Affairs to produce him in court.
