Florence Andiru Nebanda has this afternoon been sworn in as the Woman Member of Parliament for Butaleja district, replacing her young sister Cerinah who died in December last year.
 
Wearing a white dress with black strips and a black jacket, Andiru was escorted by tens of supporters who filled the Parliament gardens before they were let in the house to witness her swearing in.
 
On February 12, Andiru was declared winner of the Butaleja woman parliamentary seat after she beat four other contestants.
 
In an accent Andiru who has joined Parliament on the ruling National Resistance Movement party ticket swore to protect the constitution of Uganda amid ululations.

She was then congratulated by Speaker Rebecca Kadaga who equipped her with the constitution, parliament rules of procedure and a diary.
 
Andiru caused laughter when she walked away from the Speaker who had to call her back to notify her of her roles in two committees including a standing and a sessional committee.
 
Andiru promised to complete projects left by her late sister, increase women and youth projects and ask government to assist them in developmental projects such as agriculture.

Her election brings the number of women MPs to 135 making up 35 percent of the 386 member House.
