Bukwo Cracks Whip on Errant Health Workers

Bukwo district has cracked a whip on errant health workers at Bukwo General Hospital. They include the Acting Medical Superintendent Bukwo General Hospital, Dr. Godfrey Barteka and two midwives.



Dr. Barteka has been demoted and returned to wards for alleged negligence of duty and maladministration. The midwives are accused of soliciting Shillings 150,000 from patients.


Gabriel Richard Atama, the Bukwo Chief Administrative Officer, says they decided to crack the whip after receiving a number of complaints from the community. 


"It is very unfortunate that some of the health workers have been exhibiting unprofessional behavior at work. Cases of drug theft have been reported to the effect of recovering some drugs from a nurse's office. As an accounting officer, I need to restore order not only in the health sector but throughout all departments," Atama said on phone. 
 
He said they have taken disciplinary measures against all staff whose conduct has been queried. Michael Chebet, the Bukwo LC V Chairperson, says the conduct of some health workers has resulted into loss of lives in the district.
 
He revealed that they are investigating circumstances surrounding the death of two expectant mothers during delivery at the hospital this month.  Chebet explains that the community has on several occasions complained of negligence at the hospital.

However, some health workers complained of witch hunt in an interview with URN on phone. "Just last week, someone came here with a fifty thousand note to tempt me. I looked at the person and realized there could be a mission behind the offer. When I refused to take the money, someone later told me that it was a trap" one of the midwife's said in the hospital.


Dr. Collins Satya, the Acting District Health Officer, now acting Medical Superintended, says things have not been good at the management Level in the hospital. He acknowledges challenges especially of absenteeism, delayed handling of emergencies and indiscipline at the hospital. 


Alfred Baluku, the Bukwo District Police Commander, says they have opened a general inquiry file under GF17/2018 on the hospital. He says they are investigating cases of criminal negligence, extortion and theft of drugs among others.
