The long winding queues that characterize the student registration and fees payment process at the Makerere University Business School (MUBS) are to become a thing of the past in a few days. MUBS, working with a Nigerian computer solutions company called Socketworks, has finally joined the global ICT revolution. On Monday the university will inaugurate its brand new online college portal system. Through the College Portal software MUBS will completely automate its administrative processes in regards to student admissions and registration. Students will also use the system to access the Internet and online learning resources like offshore libraries. Jacqueline Namulwana, Business Analyst for Socketworks, explained today that students will be able to use a simple system to pay their fees, select courses and manage their courses and examination timetables. Namulwana said each student will be given a pin number which will enable them to utilize the portal. //Cue in: iThe system on #.i Cue out: i# the required course unit.i// Meredith Bates, General Manager of Socketworks in Uganda, says her company has digitized more than 50 universities and polytechnics in West Africa. She said it was able to expand into Uganda through a loan from the International Finance Corporation, the private sector arm of the World Bank Group. Socketworks will maintain the MUBS College Portal System for seven years. Several students at MUBS told Uganda Radio Network of their excitement over the new automated system. They said it would not only save them precious time in lining up to access important university resources, but also that access to new resources would complement their studies in a substantial way. //Cue in: iThat's a serious achievement #i Cue out: i# not be even there.i//
