Mugabe defeated fellow Ugandan Simon Peter Ayella 6-1, 6-2 in the first round match which sees him qualify to earn one international ranking point and a cash prize of about 1,010,000 Uganda shillings (US$280) if he falls out at the next stage.
" It is a good feeling that I have now earned my first ranking points after a long time. I will try to play my heart out against Italy's Marco Miceli in the next round," Mugabe told URN. The Italian who is ranked fifth in the tournament and 1030 by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) stopped Japan's Shunsuke Wakita 6-1, 6-3 in the first round.
In the other games played Serbia's Goran Markovic humbled Jordan Parker (USA) 6-2, 6-4, while USA's Tyler Lu ejected Venuezuela's Jordi Munoz Abreu 6-4, 7-5.
On Tuesday Uganda's two other players David Oringa and Boris Oringa will be in action against Artus Lazdins (Latvia) and Christian Paul (Nigeria) respectively.
Top seed Ivan Nedelko from Russia who won the Uganda ITF Pro F1 and F 3 singles events will be in action against India's Vasisht Cheruku.
