Mukono District Loses Land to Private Developers

Mukono district has lost 29 acres of land to private developers, URN has learnt. Mukono district officials, says the land was sold off by unidentified people. Mukono district had 49 acres of land, but only 20 acres remain.

On Tuesday, councilors resolved during their council meeting to invite the Justice Catherine Bamugemereire Land Commission to investigate the illegal sale of district land and protect the remaining land from grabbers.

Emmanuel Mbonye, the Mukono District Council Speaker, says part of the land where the district headquarters seats was bought off by a private developer only identified as Dr. Konde.

He reportedly served Mukono district eviction orders last year accusing them of trespassing on his land. Mbonye also explained that the land hosting the Production and Agricultural Department was illegally sold off to Umar Dumba, a member of the NRM executive in Mukono district.

Andrew Ssenyonga, the Mukono district chairperson told council that all the said land was sold off before he assumed the district leadership. He asked the council to form a committee to intervene in the land grabbing, which has become a problem in Mukono district.

Namwoya forest reserve and AMREF buildings where Mukono health workers reside are some of the projects that seat on part of the land that belonged to the district.
