Mukono Municipality Council has taken over the collection of taxes from taxi operators from a private company.

This follows a demonstration last week by taxi drivers, touts and operators who say the tender had been awarded to a company owned by individuals who are neither taxi operators nor owners.

According to the taxi operators, the Taxi Operators and Driver's Association (MUTODA) which was awarded the contract, is run by businessmen within the district, none of whom, is a taxi operator, driver or tout.

MUTODA was set up by the council and Joel Biriggwa, the MUTODA chairman's company Jeff Contractors Ltd, was given the deal to collect the taxes on behalf of MUTODA.

The taxi operators, drivers and touts also accuse the company of discriminating against the taxi operators based on their political affiliation.

Emmanuel Ssenderi, the head of Mukono Taxi Operators Cooperative Sacco (MUTOCS), to which the operators, drivers and touts subscribe, accuses the Town Clerk, Innocent Ahimbisibwe of ignoring them whenever they sought audience with him to raise their concerns.

In his response, Ahimbisibwe says much as there is confusion; the contracts were never awarded the deal basing on political affiliation or technical know-how.

He says as the municipal council, they have withdrawn all the responsibility of collecting taxes from MUTODA until all pending issues are addressed.

Geoffrey Nsubuga, one of the drivers says that every time they complain about the poor leadership in MUTODA, the council has always found excuses to maintain the leaders because some district leaders own shares in MUTODA.
