Nadduli Spearheads Fresh Talks to Reconcile Muslim Factions

Hajji Abdul Nadduli, the newly appointed Minister without Portfolio says he will to use his docket in cabinet to spearhead the reconciliation of rival Muslim factions.

Latest divisions within the Muslim community are traced to the 2009 split between the Kibuli based faction and the leadership of Sheik Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, the head of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council based in old Kampala.

The differences between the two groups have since spread across districts where rival District Kadhi's were elected. In Luweero there is visible animosity between members of the rival factions.

Nadduli, who is also the Vice Chairperson of the leadership at Old Kampala, says he intends to meet leaders from both factions and the various district Kadhi's to forge a way forward

Nadduli's commitment is welcomed by Muslim clerics and believers in Luweero.

The Luweero District Kadhi Mustapha Khamis Lule says the wrangles have affected key development projects some of which were funded by donors. He says several donors pulled out citing mistrust. He added that the wrangles have also spread to family and personal relationships leading to break ups over alliance to rival factions.

Sheikh Lule implored President Museveni to implement recommendations made by a committee chaired By Prof Tarsis Kabwegyere following investigations into Muslim wrangles.

Sheikh Twaha Nsanja, a former Luweero District Kadhi warned that differences within the Muslim community are a threat to their faith because they contradict teachings of the holy Quran.  Nsanja asked both factions not to see each other as enemies but as sisters and brother in Islam.

In a recent meeting with Hajji Abdul Nadduli, Supreme Mufti Sheik Silliman Kasule Ndirangwa said they will unite if those accused of mismanaging Muslims' property apologized.
