N Nakaseke District Local Government has started compensating the family that lost a mother and her unborn baby while giving birth from Nakaseke hospital after she was left unattended to by doctors for over eight hours.

The compensation process by the hospital follows a ruling by High Court Judge Benjamin Kabiito in April this year.  Justice Kabito found Doctor Davis Mubeezi liable for the death of Irene Nanteza by failing to administer emergency obstetric care.

The deceased's family was awarded thirty five million shillings as compensation for the loss of its beloved one.

Justice Kabito in the landmark ruling observed that the deceased's human and maternal rights, rights to basic medical care and the rights of her three children were violated.

Nakaseke Hospital on Friday delivered the first installment of 9.4 million shillings in a cheque  to the husband of the deceased,  David Mugerwa and his three daughters  as a part payment toward the thirty five million shillings court award.

Mugerwa while receiving the cheque said he was going to use the award money to cater for his children's needs and also pay their school fees.

He called upon Nakaseke hospital and other government hospitals to care for patients to avoid a similar scenario that befell his beloved wife.

Court evidence showed that the deceased was admitted to Nakaseke hospital at 1:35pm with a dilation of 8cm (second stage of labor).  The nurse on duty discovered at 4pm that the deceased had developed obstructed labor which would lead to her death if not operated upon.

To that effect, the nurse called Dr. Mubeezi to respond to Nanteza's emergency but her efforts yielded nothing as he was reportedly in Nakasongola District before breathing her last at 9:35pm unattended to.

This is the very matter that saw justice Kabiito travel to Nakaseke hospital to ascertain whether it was out of negligence that the expectant mother died unattended to by Dr. Mubeezi who was supposed to be on duty that fateful day. Medical statistics show that 17 pregnant women die on daily basis from preventable maternal deaths in Uganda.

The handover of the money was organized by Centre for Health, Human Rights & Development (CEHURD), a human rights NGO that provided legal service to the bereaved family.

Primah Kwagala, an official from Centre for Health, Human Rights & Development (CEHURD ) said they have written to Nakaseke district local government asking them for the payment schedule on how they intend to pay the remaining money.
