The voters in Namutumba district have tasked President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to address the high level of poverty in the district.

Among the issues causing rampant poverty are bad roads where people cannot trade their goods easily. The incumbent, also National Resistance Movement (NRM) presidential candidate will be campaigning in the district this afternoon.

They say majority of residents live below the poverty line and cannot afford basic necessities of life, despite having agricultural commodities to sell. Some of the agricultural produce includes maize, cassava, rice and ground nuts.

Hassan Walangalira, a resident of Igerera village says that in some areas like Namutumba sub county, more than 80 percent of residents can not afford treatment when sick and others can only afford having one meal a day.

Walangalira, who spoke to URN ahead of Museveni's rally in Namutumba wants him to come out with a clear strategy of addressing the poverty level in the district.

He suggested establishment of farmer's agro processing factories, reinstating cooperative movement and construction of good roads among the solutions that government can use to address poverty level in the district.

Michael Saire , incumbent Namutumba LC 5 Chairman wants the President to address the issue of poor road network in the area, something he says is partly responsible for the high poverty level in the district.

Saire particularly cited the roads in Bulange - Bugiri, Butaleja - Budumba, Igerera  to Butaleja and Kayiti to the district headquarters are in a poor condition but are the major inlet and out let of Namutumba. Saire says that the state of these roads are deplorable leaving the district locked out of some trade, development opportunities due to increased costs and time taken to transport goods and people.

President Museveni has previously promised to tarmac the road from Namutumba town council to the district headquarters in the last 10 years in vain.
Mariam Naigaga, the NRM flag bearer for Namutumba district woman parliamentary seat, says much as majority of people in Namutumba have been supporting President Museveni, some of these issues may affect his votes if he fails to come out with a clear strategy of addressing them.

Museveni is expected to address three rallies in Bukono, and Busiki constituencies in Namutumba district before going to Kibuku to address the main campaign rally.
