Nathan Byanyima Bounces Back Into Bukanga MP Race

Engineer Nathan Byanyima is the NRM candidate for the Bukanga MP by-elections. Byanyima was declared elected by Jackson Twongyirwe, the Isingiro district NRM Returning officer following an election marred by allegations irregularities such as ballot stuffing. He polled 25, 450 vote beating his main rival Steven Kangwagye Rwakanuuma who polled 24908 votes. Aron Turahe came third 1122 votes followed by Jeremiah Kamurari with 328 votes; David Masiko polled 196 and Honoraato Muhanguzi 180 votes. John Bosco Mubiru polled 103 votes and Sosten Taremwa 51 votes.

The votes polled by David Taremwa were not reflected anywhere. However, Steven Kangwagye Rwakanuuma, the second runner up of the polls has declined to concede defeat. Rwakanuuma has petitioned the party electoral commission citing ballot stuffing. He claims that stuffed boxes with pre-ticket ballots in favor of Byanyima were intercepted in Ngarama Sub County on the eve of the elections. He also faults the NRM electoral commission for allowing minors to take part in the polls.

Professor Elijah Mushemeza, the vice chairperson of the NRM electoral commission has not yet commented on the polls as he could neither pick nor return calls from our reporter. Jackson Twongirwe, the Isingiro District NRM registrar declined to comment saying he was exhausted since he had not slept since the eve of the elections. Nathan Byanyima could not be reached to comment on the allegations of voting rigging. But Aron Turahe, the second runner up of the polls has conceded defeat. The Bukanga MP seat fell vacant last month after the former MP Gregory Matovu succumbed to cancer.
