Police in Nebbi have arrested the chairperson of Oryang Boda Boda services, over allegations of diverting 9.4 million shillings meant for the youth Livelihood project.

Jude Pithua was arrested up on Tuesday by detectives from Nebbi Police Station. It's alleged that Pithua instead of buying two new boda-boda motorcycles for the group, he purchased a second hand Noah car registration number UAJ 2018V without the consent of group members.

Moses Kercan the Community Development Officer Nebbi Municipality and Focal point person Youth Livelihood Project Nebbi municipality has warned potential beneficiaries against diverting the funds.

He says government is going to put into place tight and punitive measures to curb wastage of government funds by selfish individuals.

The area LC1 chairman Mr James Thopaco blamed the youth for frustrating the project.

"How can such youth be given such huge amount of money when they have never even held anything beyond 100,000 shillings." The young people are always excited to see large sums of money and I think there should be a vigorous attempt to keenly train the youth on what they are supposed to do with the money," Thopaco said.

The Nebbi District Police Commander Justus Kashobya says investigations into the matter are on-going.

The youth livelihood program is a government scheme initiated in the 2013/14 Fiscal year aimed at equipping the young majority population with low-interest loans for them to establish income-generating ventures, which is payable after one year of operation.

So far 160 million shillings has been disbursed to 24 youth groups in Nebbi municipality. The current recovery rate is about 42%.
