Backed by a number of former FDC supporters, the Muntu-group is now on a drive to bring more people on board, to form a parallel opposition front.

The New Formation, a group led by former FDC president Maj Gen Gregory Mugisha Muntu has started a soul-searching mission in Rwenzori region. The drive is aimed at recruiting members for the group that started after Muntu's exit from the Forum for Democratic Change-FDC party.

Muntu left the FDC one month ago following disagreements with the new leadership of the party headed by Patrick Amuriat Oboi.  In his exit statement, Muntu indicated that although the elections that ushered in the current president were legitimate, the implication of the outcome left the party divided between those that were interested in defiance and those who feel strongly that the party should be focused on a different path.

Backed by a number of former FDC supporters, the Muntu-group is now on a drive to bring more people on board, to form a parallel opposition front. The group mobilisers include former leaders of the FDC party in Kabarole district headed by Nyakato Rusoke, the former FDC party chairperson in the area, Robert Mutunzi, the former Secretary-General, Peter Mwesigwa, the former District Youth Chairperson, and Joram Bintamanya, the former chairperson of Fort Portal Municipality, among others.

Each of the ten members, who attended the maiden regional meeting, held last evening was tasked to recruit at least other 50 members within a week. In the same meeting, held at Whispering Gardens in Fort Portal, the group discussed strategies for persuading Ugandans to join the new formation, timelines for their work and the kind of people to be recruited.

According to Rusoke, the regional taskforce already has more than 100 members who will be working in the districts of Kamwenge, Kabarole, Kyenjojo, Kyegegwa, Bunyangabu, Ntoroko and Bundibugyo for the good of the party.
