NRM Party Offices Closed Over Debts

NRM officials in Luweero district have abandoned work and closed the party offices over accumulated salary and rental arrears. Shafik Ntege, Luweero District NRM administrative secretary says that he decided to close the offices because of the failure by the party to clear staff salaries to the tune of shillings 11 million and rent of shillings 1.2 million.

NRM officials in Luweero district have abandoned work and closed the party offices over accumulated salary and rental arrears. Shafik Ntege, Luweero District NRM administrative secretary says that he decided to close the offices because of the failure by the party to clear staff salaries to the tune of shillings 11 million and rent of shillings 1.2 million.
 
Ntege explains that their landlord has issued the party leadership with an eviction notice after failing to pay up despite issuing various promises.  He explains that they have submitted various petitions to Amama Mbabazi, the NRM secretary general to pay up in vain. Ntege also says that their attempts to meet Mbabazi over the matter have been futile.


Michael Kivumbi, Kiwogozzi Parish NRM chairperson accuses top party officials of hiring offices to solicit votes but abandon it to workers after elections.  He says that the lack of commitment by the party leadership to maintain district offices has worsened division amongst members.

Kivumbi says that they have been using the office as center for whistleblower on cases of corruption, shoddy work, security as well as party mobilization.
 
James Lutaaya, a party supporter wonders how NRM which is in power and with two ministers from the district can fail to raise only 13 Million shillings to maintain an office. He advices Mbabazi to surrender the post of Secretary General to another person for smooth operations of party activities because he is too engaged in Premier duties.

The central Region NRM Party Chairman Abdul Nadduli and Luweero Resident District Commissioner say that they have been seeing the office closed but were not aware that the officials were stuck in debt.

Hassan Galiwango, NRM director of finance  could not be reached for comment as he neither picked nor returned calls from our reporter. The NRM office in Luweero was opened in 2004 with contribution from area Members of parliament but it was taken over by the party leadership last year.
