The ruling NRM party has been sued for failing to pay more up to 21.6 million shillings in rent arrears for its offices on Plot 10 Kyadondo Road in Nakasero, Kampala.

Nile Travel Agency Limited wants the Land Division of the High Court to order NRM to vacate the said premises, pay the money, damages and costs of the suit.

The plaintiffs claim that they executed a tenancy agreement with NRM in 2006 with the latter agreeing to pay 2,500 dollars monthly as rent. The tenants were to pay six months upfront commencing July 1st 2006.

They contend that upon the expiry of this one-year contract, the rent had to be re-negotiated by the two parties basing on the market rates. The plaintiffs say they agreed with NRM to increase rent to 4,000 dollars.

The party, however, remitted only 2,500 dollars for a period of six months, which was less by 1,500 dollars per month accumulating to 9,000 dollars in arrears.

The plaintiffs further claim that NRM refused to vacate the premises yet they wanted to renovate it.

When contacted on phone, the NRM party spokesperson Ofwono Opondo said he was away and referred URN Reporter to the party director in charge of administration, Hassan Galiwango.

Galiwango only sent a text message saying he was attending a meeting at State House but added that the party is “fully paid up” and that the story is not true.

Court has not yet summoned NRM to respond to the suit.
