Byakora wants court to declare Musevenis endorsement illegal since he was approved by the National Executive Council, whose term office expired. Also sued alongside NRM is the Electoral Commission.

A concerned member of the ruling National Resistance Movement has petitioned High Court challenging the party nomination of President Yoweri Museveni as its flag bearer. The petitioner is Anatolius Byakora, an aspirant for the Buhanguzi County parliamentary seat in Hoima District.

According to Byakora, whoever seeks to contest as the NRM presidential flag bearer must be elected by the National Conference and get endorsement from the National Executive Council-NEC.

He however argues that the term of the incumbent members of the NRM National Executive Council expired in September, which means they don't have powers to approve a Presidential candidate.

Byakora wants court to declare Museveni's endorsement illegal since he was approved by the National Executive Council, whose term of office expired. Also sued alongside NRM is the Electoral Commission.

"A declaration order that the 1st recognition of Y K Museveni as the 2nd defendant's (EC) nominated presidential aspirant is illegal/ unlawful," reads part of the suit before court.

Adding that "a declaratory order that there is no nominated presidential aspirant and presidential flag bearer ever procedurally and lawfully nominated by the 2nd defendant (EC) in accordance with the party constitution"

Through his lawyers of Sewankambo & Co Advocates, the petitioner also wants court to issue an injunction restraining Electoral Commission from recognizing Museveni as NRM presidential flag bearer.

By the time of filing this story, court was yet to summon NRM and the EC to respond to the allegations.
