A vehicle belonging to Ethics and Integrity State Minister, James Nsaba Buturo, has been impounded by the police for ferrying people suspected of bribing voters.
The vehicle, a Land Cruiser registration number UAK 727Q, was stopped at Bukimbiri in Kisoro district at about 11 a.m. this morning. Two police officers and two civilians who were in the car at the time are alleged to have been in possession of large amounts of money.
The Kisoro District Police Commander, George Abaho, refuses to discuss the case in detail. He says it is still under investigation.
Nsaba Buturo is unavailable to comment on the impounding of his car. All telephone calls to him have gone unanswered.
Nsaba Buturo is hoping to retain his Bufumbira East parliamentary seat. However he faces stiff competition from the NRM candidate, Eddie Kwizera and Habakwiha Barihima of the Forum for Democratic Change.
Kwizera says he is surprised that someone with a government position that requires him to have the highest ethical standards could be caught up in this mess. He says he wants the case fully probed and asks that the police detains all suspects until their motives are clearly ascertained.
The Kisoro Resident District Commissioner, Ahmed Doka, has received the Buturo voter bribery report. He says his office will conduct its own investigation into the matter.
