One person has died and more than 20 houses destroyed by a heavy rainstorm in Kibaale district.
The Sunday evening storm ravaged the villages of Kyakajunani, Buhonda and Nyamirama in Kisiita Sub County. The dead has been identified as Lucky Amumpaire aged 23; a resident of Nyamirama. Amumpaire was hit by her falling roof during the rainstorm. She died on spot.
Kaleb Tukwasibwe, the father of deceased, says Amumpaire had remained alone at home as the rest of the family members went to church. Tukwasibwe says on their return home after the two-hour rainstorm, they found the roof of the family’s semi-permanent house blown off. He says a search was conducted, only to find her daughter dead under the fallen roof.
Tukwasibwe did not only lose his daughter and the house but also his one acre banana plantation. Also destroyed by the storm was St. Mary Gorret Nyamirama Catholic Church, whose roof was carried away to a distance of about 100 meters. Garden crops and domestic animals did not survive the storm.
Emmy Tutamurugaho, the Kisiita District Councillor, describes the destruction as grave. Destructive rains are a common phenomenon in Kibaale district. Last year alone the district was hit by storms about three times. Local leaders blame the problem on unchecked destruction of forests which has resulted into irregular rains.
The incident comes at the time when some areas in Uganda are complaining of severe drought. In Karamoja sub-region for instance more than 22,000 pupils remain out of school, a month after the official opening of the school calendar.
Education authorities blame the problem on drought that has left many children trekking villages in search of water for the survival of their families, as opposed to attending school.
