Residents of Bugolobi middle East were this morning drawn into a fight with a gang sent to demolish homes and shops as part of an eviction order. The fight left one member of the demolition gang dead. The dead man's identity is not yet known. Two Tata lories arrived in Bugolobi at 3AM. On board the trucks were over 60 men hired to evict residents off a three acre piece of land. The occupants include both families and businesses. Residents say the demolishion group started pulling down structures, kicking doors to shops and carrying away whatever they came across. Festus Katekoko who is now nursing injuries from the fight says the residents chose to fight back. Though the attackers were armed with pix axes and eucalyptus poles, they failed to enforce the eviction. A number of shops and households reported loosing properties including pay phones, radios, clothes and paint from hardware shops. //Cue in: iThis morning I was# Cue out: #killed him.i// After fighting off the attackers the residents lit a bonfire where they pitched camp until daybreak. When Uganda Radio Network visited the scene many were trying to fix their broken doors and documenting the losses suffered in the attack. The fight is the climax of an attempt by Col. John Mugenyi's Rhino Investments to evict over 90 families from the land he bought from Talek International. According to Katekoko, Col. Mugenyi has already compensated 50 residents who have agreed to leave but 40 other residents want their share of compensation.
