More than 12 people are feared dead in Rubanda district following flush floods resulting from a heavy down pour on Tuesday. According to residents, the heavy down pour, which started around 03:30pm, lasted for about two and a half hours.
The runoff water swept two people in Rwaseyeza village in Mugyera Parish in Bufundi Sub County. Patrick Ndabweine, the Mugyera Parish LC III Councilor, identifies the flood victims as 65-year-old Veneranda Buchweera and her-six-year-old granddaughter.
Ndabweine says Buchweera was working in her garden with her granddaughter in Kitagata in Rwaseyeza village when they swept by the running water. The bodies of the duo are yet to be recovered. He says another resident identified as Allen Begare was rescued from the running water by other residents.
Ndabweine says the floods also swept several crop gardens and animals. He also says the floods left the main road that connects Muko, Bufundi, Butanda and Rubaya sub counties impassible.

Ten people were also swept away by running water in Nfasha trading center in Kacherere Parish in Muko Sub County. Peter Turyamureba, a resident of the area identifies some of the flood victims as Faith Tukacungurwa, Edith Kwatiromunda, Jack Rubyaama, Jovia Kajura, Talent, Jack and Kato and Zatuura.
Turyamureba says the victims were swept away by running water from one of the houses in the trading center where they had sought shelter from the rain. Boaz Byamukama, one of the residents told URN on Tuesday evening that they have managed to recover 7 bodies of the flood victims.
He is worried the bodies of the other flood victims could have ended up in Lake Bunyonyi. This is the second time in less than two weeks that heavy rains are claiming lives in Rubanda district.
On September 13th, floods swept away 38-year-old Annet Tugume, a resident of Rurembo cell, in Butare parish, Muko Sub County and Rev. Fr. Flugence Habarurema, a Priest at Mutolere Parish in Kabale Diocese.
Fr. Habarurema passed away at Mutolere Hospital in Kisoro town where he had been rushed after being swept off his motorcycle by the floods while heading to Rubuguri Catholic Parish in Kisoro District for pastoral work.
On Sept 11, 2017, three children on oxygen lost their lives at Kisiizi hospital in Rukungiri district when floods ravaged the generator house plunging the hospital in darkness.
Floods also filled up the hospital compound, pediatric ward, medical ward, surgical ward, maternity ward, mortuary and church among other parts of the facility bringing services to a halt.
