Police in Luweero have a arrested a 'born-again' pastor for allegedly conning several  parents of 14 million shillings in Kikyusa sub county under the guise of securing  foreign bursaries for their children.

The suspect Daniel Mwanje (42) is a pastor affiliated with Divine Gospel Outreach located in Bweyogerere with branches at Munyonyo and Mukono district.

Steven Semanda, the Luweero Criminal Investigations Department (CID) head, says Mwanje's arrest comes after a 10 month hunt.

Semanda explains that Mwanje began his con game in February 2012 when he called Pastor Fred Lutalo of Eden Revival Church in Kikyusa asking for a meeting with the area congregation to preach before it. He identified himself as a pastor based in Bweyogerere.

During several sermons before the Kikyusa congregation, Mwanje informed his audience that he had the connections to help parents who wanted their children to go and study abroad.

Mwanje reportedly informed the interested parents that all he needed was 100,000 shillings per child to acquire the bursary forms.

However, several days after collecting money for up to 144 children, Mwanje vanished from the area.

Among the parents who filed complaints were Agnes Kirabira who paid 400,000 shillings for four children and Robert Kawooya a father of 7 was conned of 700,000 shillings.

The tracking down process eventually led to Bweyogerere where Mwanje was picked up and returned to Luweero where he faces charges of obtaining money by false pretence.
