Patients Accuse Mbarara Hospital Staff of Extortion

Several patients have accused Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital staff of extorting money from them in order to provide services.
 
Paul Mukama from Rukungiri district says on Christmas Eve he was asked to pay Ugx 10,000 shillings to be attended to by a nursing officer at the hospital.
 
Mukama says after failing to raise the said money he was turned away without receiving any medical attention.

Atuhaire says after failing to raise the money she approached the office of the deputy resident district commissioner Mbarara Moses Mwebesa who offered her support. He promised to follow up the matter with the hospital administration.
 
Agirie Aligawesa Lubega, the senior principal nursing officer Mbarara regional referral Hospital, admits receiving complaints from patients accusing health workers of extorting money from them especially during Christmas seasons when there are fewer staff.

Dr. Selestine Barigye the Hospital director promised to follow up the matter and have all implicated health personnel penalized.
 
Barigye also warned patients not to pay any money to health workers saying services at the Government facility are free of charge. Any payment must be receipted.
