A small cargo plane with about 8 United States (US) soldiers has made an emergency landing in Kiwawu village along the Kampala-Mityana highway.

The plane whose intended destination was South Sudan is believed to have been flying from the Ugandan army airbase in Entebbe.

Officials from the US embassy have not yet reacted to the emergency landing as their embassy offices are closed and their official lines off.

Photos from the scene of the emergency landing show men dressed in American marine combat uniforms guarding the plane.

In another photo, a traffic officer is seen diverting traffic off the road on which the plane successfully landed.

The photos also show crowds forming on both sides of the plane.

The plane is believed to have been heading to South Sudan but ran out of fuel.

It is a known fact that the US military operates a sizeable number of planes at Entebbe airfield where they have an established army centre. The centre was set up during the hunt for Joseph Kony in 2008.
