The 6th African Scrabble championship qualifiers are scheduled to kick off next weekend in Kampala.

The two day event will take place at SPA Scrabble club at Bakuli Hotel.

Lawrence Onyoin, scrabble qualifier championship organizer, says the tournament will attract over 100 players in clubs travelling from 11 districts in Uganda. The top two players in the qualifiers will represent Uganda at the African Scrabble Championships that will take place in Livingstone town in Zambia from November 20th - 25th 2012.

Among the Ugandan top players confirmed to compete in the tournament are top seed Richard Geria, who has won 5 consecutive local scrabble titles this year and Edwin Mugisha.

Geria, who tops Uganda’s rankings with 100 points, says he is in top form and wants to win a 6th consecutive title to accumulate more points which will enable him get seeded in a better position on the African continent. He says he just plays to enjoy the game and that is why he keeps on winning the championships and qualifiers without any serious challengers.

Mugisha on the other hand believes he can give the scrabble competition his best to become Uganda’s top seed. He is currently second with 40 points.

Jinja-based Nelson Kyagera, who is in fifth position with 21 points, says that after finishing second in the scrabble tournament in Soroti, he can vie for top position to increase his number of points and possibly represent Uganda in Zambia.
