Police have fired live bullets and teargas to disperse residents of Kiryatete, a suburb of Hoima municipality, who were protesting against the poor state of Hoima-Fort- Portal road this Morning.

The Residents blocked the road with Logs, tree branches and stones paralyzing transport as several vehicles remained stuck on the road for several hours. They say that the road has increasingly become impassable as a result of potholes and tonnes of dust stirred by passing vehicles.

The road is part of the 135 kilometer Kigumba-Kabwoya-Kyenjojo road whose construction was undertaken in 2015 by China Number 5 Engineering Company Limited under funding by the African Development Bank.

Bosco Kyasimiire, a resident of Kiryatete says that the road has become a nightmare, especially during rainy seasons yet, the authorities seem unbothered by complaints lodged by the residents over the years.

But Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Region Police Spokesperson told URN that police was forced to fire live bullets and teargas to disperse the protestors because they had become violent. The police later cleared the road of all stones, logs and tree branches that were used by the protestors.

He says police has arrested three of the ringleaders whose names have been concealed for fear of jeopardizing police investigations. They are currently detained at Hoima Central Police Station pending investigations into charges of inciting violence.
