The Police in Kampala have arrested what they call a notorious thug that has been terrorizing the business community in the Central Business District by staging robberies of huge sums of money in which some people were killed.

Paddy Sserunjogi, popularly known as Sobi, was arrested by police at Nebbi Park after a tip off by area local council officials.

Sobi, a one-time police informer was picked together with Ivan Mugerwa and immediately taken to CPS Kampala where the two are currently being held.

The CPS Police Commander, James Ruhweza said Sobi has been on police’s wanted list and had evaded arrest because he was operating a very sophisticated network of criminals who would tip him off whenever police approached his hideout.

Sobi, who is a body builder, was arrested following the introduction of community policing at Arua and Nebbi Park, the known centres for buses heading to Northern Uganda, West Nile and Juba.

Ruhweza believes the suspect must have been targeting a customer in DFCU Bank on William Street when he was arrested.

At CPS, police struggled with Sobi as they carried him from the cells to parade him for the cameras.

He tried to fight off a group of policemen who were lifting him in the air to ensure his body did not touch the ground or else he beats them.

Among the cases that have been traced to him the murder early this month of a woman who was vending merchandise when thugs opened fire killing her instantly as they robbed 120million shillings from a bureau at Arua Park.

In another incident Sobi reportedly stole money from Llyod Forex Bureau on Luwum Street and avoided arrest by throwing money in the air for on-lookers which helped him to get away. Two days ago he allegedly attacked a forex bureau in Majestic Plaza in Kampala where he targeted 190million shillings from the bureau. However, the proprietors of the forex bureau managed to save a polythene bag containing 100million shillings leaving the thugs with 90millions shillings. URN could not independently verify these claims.

According to Kampala Metropolitan spokesperson, Ibn Senkumbi, Sobi had ten fresh files against which he was being sought.

According to police, Sobi once staged a barrier across Buganda road, robbed people of their personal belongings and is believed to be behind a gang of thieves that steals from revelers thronging concerts.

When police chief Kale Kayihura was told of the arrest of Paddy Serunjogi, he ordered the DPC CPS, to ensure he appears in court.

The Chairman Kampala City Traders Association – KACITA, Everest Kayondo welcomed the arrest of Sobi saying such people made business in Kikuubo and surrounding areas difficult.

Kayondo however, observed that sometimes these thugs work with police and local councilors to terrorise the business community, adding that he had brought it to the attention of the Inspector General of Police Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura.
