A Police officer in the Albertain Region is in trouble for pocketing a bribe of Shillings 150,000 to release a suspect on police bond. Detective Corporal Tonny Omala is in the custody of the Police Professional Standards Unit (PSU).
According to information obtained from Police, Omalla allegedly demanded a bribe of Shillings 250,000 from an unnamed suspect to compromise his investigations but was paid Shillings 150,000 and released the suspect on bond.
Uganda Radio Network understands that the suspect who was being investigated on a tentative charges of threatening violence complained to PSU that he had been made to pay for bond. The PSU Commandant, Joel Aguma confirmed the arrest and ongoing investigations. "Bond is for free and no officer should be paid for it. We are still carrying out investigations and will communicate once they are complete," said Aguma.
While the investigations were still ongoing, the detective contacted the suspect asking for an additional Shillings 50,000 to help close the file. A reliable source privy to the ongoing investigations told URN that, the detective was recorded by the suspect asking for the money. "He promised him that he would help have the Resident state Attorney closes the file without charging him in court. We have the recordings," the source said.
