Police Seal Off Soroti Public Garden Ahead of Mbabazi's Rally

By 7am this morning, hundreds of people from different parts of Soroti district had already gathered outside Soroti Public Gardens to attend presidential aspirant Amama Mbabazis rally.

Police have sealed off Soroti Public Gardens ahead of Amama Mbabazi's scheduled public rally in Soroti town today. According to our reporter in Soroti, the heavily armed police personnel have blocked members of the public from accessing the venue of the rally.

By 7am this morning, hundreds of people from different parts of Soroti district had already gathered outside Soroti Public Gardens to attend presidential aspirant Amama Mbabazi's rally. 

In addition to sealing off Soroti Public Gardens, there is increased visibility of police and President Yoweri Museveni's supporters in major trading centers along the Mbale-Soroti road, where the ex-premier was expected to make a stopover to greet residents.
 
The pro-Museveni supporters are dressed in the NRM party T-shirts.  It is not clear, whether the deployment at Soroti Public Gardens is aimed at offering Mbabazi protection or to block him from addressing the grounds.

Willy Otai one of Amama's support who had traveled  fromAmuria district told URN that he had come to listen to his president because he wants change.

The National Coordinator for AmamaMbabazi's Campaign, Idris Kizza told URN that they were cleared by Soroti Municipal council and Police to use the venue after they paid for the Venue.
Stanley Eroku, the Mobilizer and Coordinator for Teso say they would break the gates and enter inside the public Gardens.

Juma Hassan Nyene, the Police Public Relations officer East Kyoga region said they received a communication from the town clerk Soroti revoking the earlier letter which had allowed Amama to hold a rally at Soroti Public Gardens.

On Tuesday, the Electoral Commission warned all presidential aspirants to stick to consultative meetings in line with the provision of the Presidential and Parliamentary Amendment Act 2005.  

Section 3 of the Presidential Elections Act 2005, allows an aspiring presidential candidate to consult in preparation for his or their nomination within twelve months before the nomination date.

The venue of the consultations had by the time of updating this stationary been shifted to Soroti sports ground located about three hundred from the Independence Grounds.  Mbabazi had already arrived Sports gardens. He was received by a procession that met his convoy at Opuyo almost eight kilometers from Soroti town.  

A number of people have traveled neighboring districts of Katakwi , Amuria , Serere , Kumi , Bukedea and Ngora districts.
