Saulo Ngobi, the Officer in charge of Kaaza police station in Gyaguzi Sub County was however traveling on his own, after the district police authorities said they did not assign him.

Ronald Isabirye, a fisherman who was together with the drowned police constable says a heavy wind blew the boat on which they were, pushing Ngobi into the lake. According to Isabirye, the deceased had no life jacket. He says they went into the lake at midnight today and Ngobi drowned at around 4 o’clock.

Martin Okooyo, the Mayuge district police commander blames the accident on illegal assignments by the officer, which he says were not sanctioned. He says the policeman who drowned assigned himself the duty of looking for illegal fishermen and was not well protected hence dying.

According to the normal procedure, police informs the Fisheries and Beach Management Unit officers before hunting for illegal fishermen.

Sowedi Igaga, the chairman Beach Management Unit at Kaaza Landing Site called the incident bad and unfortunate. He suspects the officer had other hidden motives. He blames such officers for failing the fight against illegal fishing yet the blame is put on the fisheries officers and the Beach Management Officers.

The body of the drowned officer has not been recovered.
