A section of political leaders in Jinja have accused the National Resistance Movement party of hoarding sugar selling it at a cheaper price so as to please people.

This follows reports that Kalisa Karangwa, the Jinja municipality NRM chairperson is selling sugar at the party offices at Shs 3,000 per kilogram. While a 50-bag of sugar goes for 240,000 shillings in supermarkets, Karangwa is selling the same at 113,000 shillings.

Close to 60,000 kilograms of sugar from Lugazi sugar factory was off loaded at the NRM offices where people queued to buy the commodity.

Musisi Kibugudhu, Walukuba- Masese division councilor says the act shows politicians in the NRM have sugar and have deliberately hidden it to increase its price.

He says on issues that affect the majority of the people, politics should be put aside. He calls for government to remove what he called double standards.

Mubarak Kirunda, Jinja central division chairperson says it is bad politics to divide people. He says political leadership should be broad based and not to use commodities like sugar to show that some political party members can offer some thing better than others.

Mohammed Baswari Kezaala, Jinja Mayor accused some NRM party members of always wanting to be seen to find solutions to people’s problems, yet the solutions are short term.
He says government should ensure the dollar is not scarce instead of accepting NRM party members have commodities to sell at a cheaper price.

Asked to comment, Kalisa Karangwa said he wants to show people that traders are cheating them and is ready to lobby for a probe committee to investigate commodity prices that have increased in Jinja.
