A mysterious fire on Sunday night has left property worth millions of shillings destroyed in Kiryatete East division in Hoima Municipality.

Peter Mayanja, the area Local Council one chairman says he got a call from one of the residents an hour after the 11pm fire had started and he immediately alerted the police to put it off although the damage was already immense.

Quoting some eyewitnesses, Mayanja suspects the fire to have started from a lit charcoal stove that was left in one of the restaurants.

Among the burnt property are; four makeshift restaurants, one charcoal store containing about 30 sacks, two video halls, a metal scrap store and a furniture workshop among others.

One of the victims, Julius Mugabo, a video hall operator says he lost property worth over three million shillings in the fire. He explains that he lost a satellite dish, about one hundred movies, two 17-inch television sets, and computers among other items.

Mugabo says he received news of the fire at about midnight and rushed to the scene.

Agnes Nyamaizi, a restaurant operator lost her 300,000 shillings cash in the fire. A puzzled Nyamaizi told journalists that she had left the money in the restaurant hoping to use it the following morning.

By the time of filing this report on Monday, the aggrieved vendors were at the scene trying to sort out their burnt merchandise.

Augustine Kasangaki, the Hoima district police commander declined to comment on the cause of the fire saying the regional fire office is investigating the matter.

In May last year, merchandise worth over 10 million shillings was lost after fire burnt several produce stores in Kiryatete East.
