The divisions stem from a move by the leadership of Kyamuhunga–Butare Town Council to push for a municipality status barely a year after it was elevated to a town council. The leaders are also seeking to annex Bitooma Sub County to create Kyamuhunga –Bitooma Town Council.

A bid to elevate Kyamuhunga Town Council in Bushenyi district to municipal status has elicited mixed reactions among voters in the area.   A cross section of them argues that their leaders are fronting proposals without consulting locals for their input into the process.

The divisions stem from a move by the leadership of Kyamuhunga - Butare Town Council to push for a municipality status barely a year after it was elevated to a town council. The leaders are also seeking to annex Bitooma Sub County to create Kyamuhunga - Bitooma Town Council.

The proposals which have been endorsed by Bushenyi District Local Government will leave Nyabubaare and Kakanju as the only town sub-counties that make Igara West Constituency.   According to the district authorities, the proposals are born out of a need to extend services closer to the people.

The proposed municipality will have one Health Center IV, six trading centres and 250 square kilometres of roads. It has five tea processing factories, 30 primary schools and six secondary schools.

But consultations which were initiated by area Member of Parliament Raphael Magyezi on the creation of the municipality have been met with strong resistance.

Jackson Ahebwa, a resident of Bitooma Trading Centre says that the area MP is only pushing for the creation of another constituency to guarantee his return to parliament in 2021 upon realizing that he is unpopular in the sub-counties of Kakanju and Nyabubare.

Adrine Kobusingye, a businesswoman in Butare Trading Centre says that the move is being fronted by politicians with selfish interests adding that there is no need for the elevation of the area to a Municipality.

Onesimus Tumutegyereize, a resident of Kyamuhunga says that the move is uncalled for, especially since the area is still struggling to stabilize and deliver services after the creation of a town council last year.

However, Asura Niwe, a resident of Mashonga in Kyamuhunga welcomes the move saying its ideal for better provision of services. Her view is equally held by fellow resident Juliet Asiimwe.

Daniel Kakwaya one of those supporting the move argues that the elevation of the area to a municipality will help locals get better services.

However, Igara west Member of Parliament Raphael Magezi says that the proposal for the creation of the municipality is demand driven. He rubbishes claims that the locals were not consulted.
