Rakai Officials Held for Embezzlement

Daniel Samula, the Rakai Town Clerk and Treasurer Robert Kyambadde are in trouble alleged connivance to embezzle Shillings 50 million. The duo was picked up by officers from the Special Investigations Unit from their homes and taken to Kampala for investigations.
The money in question was released in the 2012-2013 financial year to rehabilitate roads in Rakai town council. The officials reportedly forged signatures and reportedly withdrew the money from the town council accounts in Stanbic Bank-Kyotera branch.

As a result, Abdu Batambuze, the former Rakai Chief Administrative Officer interdicted Samula on the orders of the Local Government Ministry, permanent secretary. Batambuze argued that Samula was no longer fit to hold public office following his actions. He further directed police to investigate circumstances under, which the funds were stolen and bring the perpetrators to justice.  

Julius Gobolo, the Rakai District Police Commander has confirmed the arrest officials for questioning over the funds, adding that they will be arraigned before the anti-corruption court once the investigations are completed. According to Gobolo, Samula has been involved in several cases of fraud, which are being investigated.  He however, declined to divulge details.

Robert Benon Mugabi, the Rakai LC V Chairperson, says the abuse of office and embezzlement of public funds are the key issues he intends to counter during this term of office. He adds that the poor road network in Rakai town council has often affected the transportation of goods and services. He appeals to other public servants to be honest and offer good services to the people.
