Residents Beat Up UWA Official Over Impounded Hippos Meat

Angry residents of Agule Aukot village in Gweri Sub-county Soroti district has assaulted a Uganda Wildlife Authority-UWA official for impounded the meat of Hippopotamus that was killed by unknown people on Monday morning.
 
 

The residents ganged up against Simon Peter Obila, who is attached to Murchison Falls Game Reserve when police drove off with the impounded hippo meat pickup registration number UAE 802 U and he remained behind to sensitize them against poaching.
 

 
The angry residents attacked Obila accusing him of calling Police to take away the Hippos that they should have shared amongst themselves. It took the intervention of a team of Police officers led by Soroti District Police Commander, Henry Moses Ochieng to save Obila from the wrath of the angry residents.
 
 

Ochieng blamed Obila for remaining behind alone to speak to the residents without police protection. According to Obila, the three year old female Hippo is believed to have been killed by a resident of the area he identified as Steven Olupot, who is at large.
 
 
 
He said this is the fourth hippo being shot dead by residents of Gweri Sub County, adding that another hippo was killed during the Easter week. Mohammad Salim, an official attached to Mt. Elgon Game Reserve in Mbale picked up the Hippo meat later, saying they would use it to feed Hyenas in the reserve.
 

 
A resident who spoke to URN on condition of anonymity, said hippos often stray in their crop gardens and leave a lot of destruction. He believes the Hippos strayed from Awoja, a tributary of Lake Bisina that flows into Lake Kyoga, which is near the village. 



According to residents, they often see footprints of Hippos in their village.
