There is anger and bitterness over the arrest of Joseph Muteule Muyonga, one of the claimants for the resettlement land for Bududa mudslide victims in Bunambuye Sub County in Bulambuli district.

Muyonga is one of the lead claimants of the land on block 10. He was arrested and whisked off by security on Wednesday during the visit of the Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda to launch the Shillings 32 billion Bulambuli resettlement project.

Muyonga was enraged when Inyasio Mudimi, the Elgon County MP, supported the project and told residents that government was going to tarmac Muyembe-Nakapiripirit road. He criticized some members of Parliament, saying they had wanted to fail the government project.

"You cannot fail government projects,'' Mudini emphasized. Muyonga couldn't have any of this. He shot up from his seat and approached the tent of VIPs and started addressing the prime minister, saying they will not allow the landslide victims to resettle in the area unless they are compensated prompting security to apprehend him.

He was bundled on a police double cabin and taken to Bulambuli Police station. Mark Barasa, the LC 3 Chairperson of Bunambutye sub county has faulted police for arresting Muyonga, saying they should have allowed him to raise his concerns.

"As a leader I am disappointed that the prime minister only emphasized the success of resettlement project when many people in Bunambutye Sub County were waiting to hear his commitment on the issue of compensation," he said.  He said most of the people who were using the land have nowhere to dig since the land was sold off by Mudimi.

Barasa says there are 36 genuine complainants who have registered complaints with his office. Bosco Khisa, the LC 3 councilor of Bumasari parish also faults police for arresting Muyonga for trying to raise his plight with the prime minister. Khisa said it is wrong for government to displace some Ugandans to resettle others.

Maurice Barasa, a resident of Bubulo in Bufuni sub county says Government has failed to compensate his in-laws for their land yet they were born in Bunambutye sub county in Bulambuli district.

But Alphonse Musoni, the Bulambuli District Police Commander, says they picked up Muyonga because he was inciting violence. He didn't explain whether or not he will be charged in court.
