Road Works Excite Lira Residents

Recently, Uganda National Roads Authority-UNRA embarked on the rehabilitation of the road following various petitions by area residents.

Residents of Agweng Sub County in Lira are excited about the rehabilitation of the 20km road stretch from Agweng Town board to Gulu district.  It is the shortest route to Gulu district through Aromo Sub County in Lira district. The road has been impassable for sometime as a result of floods.

Recently, Uganda National Roads Authority-UNRA embarked on the rehabilitation of the road following various petitions by area residents. Richard Okello, the Agweng sub county LC 3 chairperson he is excited that the road has initially been rehabilitated. He says the road was in a very bad shape as all the culverts had broken down.

Okello says the before the road became impassable it was the major access route for farmers to transport their produce to the market. He says many children have been missing school because of the poor state of the road. Okello lists about some residents who injured because of the bad state of the road. They are Michael Oluk, Denis Dila and Samwiri Okello.

Samwiri Okello, a resident of the area says once the rehabilitation work is complete they find easy to access lira town through Pader district. Patrick Agona, the Lira UNRA station engineer says they expect to complete the rehabilitation work within two weeks. He says that rehabilitation work will include putting murrum on the road and installing new culverts.

Susan Akuny, the Lira Resident District Commissioner has asked residents to closely monitor the rehabilitation work to ensure those working on the road, don’t siphon fuel from graders. Most roads in rural areas in Lango region under Central government are in bad shape compared to roads under district local governments.
