Leaders in Rwampara County in Mbarara district have started a campaign to plant 40,000 trees in the area.

The move is aimed at averting topography and environment related problems such as landslides. Human activities such as cutting of trees, bush burning and overgrazing have left part of the hilly area bare.

Farmers have also registered poor yields as a result of poor agricultural practices.

The tree-planting campaign is being spearheaded by the area Member of Parliament Charles Ngabirano and the leadership of Mbarara district.

Under the campaign, locals will be given free Eucalyptus and pine seedlings for planting. Locals living in areas with a hilly terrain are being given the first priority.

Ngabirano says that he has already procured a total of 20,000 tree seedlings to cater for the first phase of the project and more seedlings will be procured after the first batch of the seedlings have been planted.

He says that the rains have in the past left roads impassable as well as destroying crop gardens.

Mbarara District Chairperson Tumusiime Bamuturaki says that the district had always longed to have the bare hills in Rwampara covered with trees. He says that the locals should put the opportunity to good use and also plant more trees in addition to the free seedlings that they will be given.
