During her arrest, Florence Nalumaga told the Police that the baby’s father Umar Sseremba, a motor vehicle mechanic, neglected her after delivery yet she had no money to buy milk and clothes for the baby. She also said that the baby was interfering with her business.
The 23 year old sex worker Florence Nalumaga was arrested Monday night from Safari lodge after residents in Mukudde zone tipped Police that they had found Nalumaga’s crying baby wrapped in a bed sheet inside the garbage pit.
The residents, led by the LC3 chairman for Nyendo Senyange division, Joseph Kabulasoke picked the baby from the pit and took it to Police and thereafter to the division health centre where it is undergoing treatment.
During her arrest, Florence Nalumaga told the Police that the baby’s father Umar Sseremba, a motor vehicle mechanic, neglected her after delivery yet she had no money to buy milk and clothes for the baby.
She said that she has been a sex worker for the last five years. Umar Sseremba began a relationship with her in 2011 from Safari lodge. The relationship soured after she became pregnant and Sseremba declined to offer her assistance.
Nalumaga told Police that she decided to throw away the baby because not only could she not afford to look after it anymore but also because the baby was interfering with her business.
The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) officer in charge of Nyendo Police, Anna Tukamuherwa confirmed that Florence Nalumaga is being held at Nyendo Police station and she will be charged with attempted murder.
Anna Tukamuherwa observed that since this year begun, Police in Nyendo have registered five cases of babies and children aged between 1 to 3 years dumped at garbage pits or abandoned in the town by their parents.
Nyendo is one of the stop-over towns for truck drivers along Kampala-Masaka-Mbarara high way and prostitution is a booming business in this town.
