Uganda has been drawn to open the 2017 Africa Netball Championship with a game against Botswana on Saturday at the MTN Arena, Lugogo.

According to the Confederation of African Netball Associations, only one game will be played on the opening day and three on Sunday.


Peace Proscovia, Uganda's captain who is based in England said on Thursday that they will be all out to start the Championship with a win. "It is always great to play at home in-front of our fans. This is a kind of Championship where every match count s and we must take every game like a final," added Proscovia who features for Lightening Lougborbough in England.


Susan Anek, President of the Uganda Netball Federation (UNF) said she expects a great tournament because they have prepared to be good hosts and also hope that the Che Cranes can win the trophy.


"We still have some financial challenges for the team and the event. But we shall try our best to organise a successful tournament," she added.


Although Africa' top Netball playing nation South Africa will miss the Championship all the other teams like Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Uganda will battle in the event which concludes on June 29th.


Malawi who are ranked sixth in the world and favourites to win the event are expected to start their campaign against Zimbabwe on June 25th, the same day Uganda will also battle Namibia and Botswana face Zambia. The Championship will be played on a round robin system (teams all play each other).
