Soroti District Council Approves Creation of a New County

Soroti district Council has approved the creation of a new County to be curved out of the current Soroti County.

With a population of 247,712 residents, Soroti County is made up of the sub counties of Gweri, Tubur Arapai, Asuret, Katine, Kamuda and Soroti.  However council resolved that the administrative division is too big to be catered for under one unit.

The new county, Dakabela will consist of the Sub Counties Arapai, with a population of 40,334 people, Tubur with a population of 21,766 people and Katine with a population of 35,657 people.  This will reduce the counties under Soroti County to four.

Soroti district Speaker Andrew Odongo said District Council resolution will be submitted to the Ministry of Local Government to pave way for other processes within Cabinet and Parliament.

He added that after Parliamentary approval, the list of the new counties will be sent to the Electoral Commission for gazzeting as electoral areas.

The motion for the approval of the new county was moved by Margret Amongin, the councilor representing Eastern division, Soroti and was seconded by Emmanuel Eliau, the Soroti district youth councilor.
