Secondary school Teachers in Soroti have gone on strike to protest against delayed salaries. The strike that started on Monday has interrupted both academic and extra curricular activities at the biggest day school in Teso. The school headmaster, Patrick Atan, says the teachers have not received salaries for the past three months. The teachers on Wednesday rejected appeals by the Soroti Resident Commissioner, Omax Omeda, to end the strike and resume teaching as their salaries are worked out. The teachers said they are willing to end the strike on condition that their salary arrears are cleared. The Soroti district Chief Finance Officer, George William Omuge, says that teachers have not been paid due to a shortfall in the district education budget. Omuge explains that it may not be possible to clear the arrears, because the ministry of Finance has not yet released the money for teacher's salaries.
