South Sudan Refugees Overwhelm Lamwo

At least 2,000 refugees have crossed into Uganda through Ngom Oromo, Waligo, Apiriti and Aweno Olwiyo border crossings all in Lamwo district. The office of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has evacuated some 750 of these for resettlement in Adjumani district.

Lamwo district is facing multiple challenges in receiving and hosting refugees fleeing fighting in South Sudan.

At least 2,000 refugees have crossed into Uganda through Ngom Oromo, Waligo, Apiriti and Aweno Olwiyo border crossings all in Lamwo district. 

The office of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has evacuated some 750 of these for resettlement in Adjumani district. 

John Komakech Ogwok, the Lamwo district chairperson says the rest of the asylum seekers have been absorbed into various communities in the district.  He says the excess human population is worsening an existing acute food shortage in the district.

Ogwok says those absorbed in communities in Lamwo are resisting relocation to UNHCR settlement Camp in Adjumani. He says the district is logistically challenged to monitor those being hosted by communities for disease outbreaks.

Last year, the UN Children's agency - UNICEF - warned of a possible polio outbreak in South Sudan saying more than 200,000 children under five had not received vaccination for the past four years.

The local government leader wants the ministry of disaster preparedness, refugees and relief to set up a settlement camp for refugees in the district.

Jonathan Rutabingwa, Lamwo resident district commissioner, says some of the refugees are fleeing food shortage worsened by fighting in South Sudan.

According to UNHCR, the war in South Sudan has displaced 1.6 million people including more than 600,000 who fled to Uganda in July alone. Ends.
