St. Mary's Kasaala Health Centre II Goes 8 Months Without Mama Kits

Midwives at St. Mary's Kasaala Health Center II in Luweero are going through hard times to handle delivery due to lack of mama kits. A mama kit, which is also known as Clean Delivery Kit, include; 500 grams of cotton wool, baby soap, two razor blades, 2 polythene sheets, two gauze pieces, three surgical gloves, and an immunization card.

Government supplies mama kits to all its health facilities. However, medics at St. Mary’s Kasaala Health Center II say they stopped receiving the mama kits 8 months ago. St. Mary’s Kasaala Health Center II handled between 30 and 35 deliveries each month.
 
Sylvia Namirembe, a midwife at Kasaala health center says they are currently forced to improvise the mama kits. She explains that the absence of the mama kits inconveniences the mothers and jeopardizes the health of the midwives.

Dr Ritah Nakalega, the Officer In Charge of the facility says most of the expectant mothers come empty handed saying they were told government provided the mama kits.

Dr Ritah Nakalega says she has written to the relevant authorities to restock the mama kits in vain. Efforts to get a comment from Luweero District Health Officer about the lack of the mama kits didn’t yield any results.
