Stalled Soroti-Mbale Road Construction Hits Local Businesses

The construction of the Mbale-Kumi-Soroti Road has stalled, causing massive losses for businesses operating along the route. The section of the road on which construction has halted is between Kumi and Mbale. Work done by Cementers Uganda, the road works company, has been put off since September last year. The street has never been re-opened since then. The street has a string of shops dealing in garments, electrical appliances, restaurants, two clinics and a taxi park. Now the business community who are operating there are complaining of making loses after the road was blocked and traffic diverted to alternative routes. Shifa Kakaire who deals in garments says a part from the road being deserted; the few customers who come around shun their clothes because of the dust that has made them appear like they are old. Kakaire blames the company for failing to fix the road since September last year when they blocked the street. // Cue in: "When they just..." Cue out "...from the road" // Another businessman John Simiyu, the Director of the once popular Simmico Hotel says he has been forced to shutdown his restaurant because of unbearable dust from the stalled road. // Cue in: "Apparently as I speak..." Cue out "... The stalled road project has also affected the operation of taxi business. Moses Mukasa a cab driver says the stalled road project has affected their business as they no longer have a stage. Mukasa says despite losing their customers the local authorities continue charging them a daily loading fee of shillings 1500. // Cue in: "You may find that..." Cue out "...of the road" // Officials of Cementers and UNRA could not be reached for comment. Henry Nalyanya the Mbale Deputy Resident District Commissioner says they ordered for temporary closure of the road following complaints from the business community that there was too much dust from it. Nalyanya says the management of Cementers Contractors has assured the office of the RDC that the road will be reopened to the public in a fortnight.
