15-year-old Enoch Rwagemu, a resident of Rwamuhuku village in Sanga Sub County in Kiruhura district has lost both hands after he was attacked by a stray hyena from Lake Mburo National park in the wee hours of this morning.

Reports from the area indicate that the minor was attacked by the hyena at about 1:00am while sleeping in a hut with poor shutters. Rwagemu attempted to fight off the hyena but it bit off his left hand and two fingers from his left hand.

He reportedly raised an alarm, which attracted the attention of residents but the hyena took off. Jossy Muhangi, the Public Relations Manager Uganda Wildlife Authority says Rwagemu is currently admitted at Mayanja Memorial Hospital where both hands have been amputated.

He says Uganda Wildlife Authority is paying the medical bills for the injured boy. Muhang says the hyena later attacked a sheep and killed a dog before it was hunted down by the community members and killed. This is not the first time game animals have attacked residents outside the protected areas. Early this year, stray elephants killed three people in Oyam district.
