Suspect Commits Suicide in Police Cells

A suspect has committed suicide while in custody at Magwa Police Post, Jinja District. The deceased is identified as Musa Mufumbiro.

It is alleged that Mufumbiro hanged himself using a piece of cloth. Mufumbiro, a motorist attached to Kaziminji boda-boda stage, in Jinja town was on Thursday arrested after failing to pay a 300,000 shillings debt owed to Pride Microfinance Bank.

A member of the village security team, who spoke on condition of anonymity, says that he went to the police post, but there was no single police officer until at around 6:00 am when a constable arrived.

The member says that when the police constable checked into the cells, the suspect had committed suicide.

Baker Kintu, the village chairperson faults police for negligence and abscondment from duty during night hours.

Sam Gabantu, a brother to the deceased stormed Jinja Central Police Station in protest. He says that the police have refused to brief the family members about the circumstances which led to Mufumbiro's death.

Paul Nkore, the Kiira region police commander, confirmed the incident but refused to divulge more details.
