Uganda’s top tennis player Duncan Mugabe has abandoned his partial tennis scholarship in the US and returned to Uganda.

The player's exasperated father James Kasumba who works with the National Council of Sports, Lugogo, said that Mugabe had complained he was not making any money in the US.

Mugabe, who won a bronze medal at the 2011 All Africa Games in Mozambique, has been in the US for the last two years under going training at one of the training centres in San Francisco.

Although Uganda Radio Network (URN) failed to speak to Mugabe on phone since it was switched off, his father said the young man will now have to work very hard in Uganda because he needs to play in a number of International tournaments to improve his ranking.

Meanwhile the 2013 Tennis Ladder was officially launched last week and action is expected to lact two months. The Ladder which has attracted 30 players will have Ivan Kyeirembo as the top seed, while Charles Ariho and Laura Van Djik are ranked second and third respectively. Last year’s winner Henry Muyanja is ranked seventh.

Tournament Director Victors Drile said he expects a very challenging Ladder since many players have been working out in the off season. Drille said the rules had been maintained but players are allowed to challenge four players above them.
