Three people died on spot this morning in an accident that occurred at Lwera, 30 kilometers along the Masaka- Kampala highway. Andrew Sorowen, the Southern Regional Police Commander, has identified the victims as Deo Kirunda, a taxi driver in Masaka, and Nalweyiso Ssenabulya, a prominent businesswoman in Masaka. Sorowen says the accident occurred at 5.00am shortly after a gang of armed robbers swung into the road and attempted to block the speeding taxi. In an act of fright, the taxi driver swerved off the road but instead rammed into one of the suspected robbers killing him on the spot. In a fit of rage, the robbers opened gun fire at the Taxi, deflating the tyres. The driver lost control in the long run. Six people survived the accident with injuries. Some of the survivors have been identified as Rev. Father Vincent Kayiira, who had just returned from south SouthAfrica, Calmax Lutalo, a teacher at Kaddugala Secondary school in Masaka and Pastor Kambugu George, the head of the Southern Region SDA church. Doctors at Kitovu Hospital where the victims have been admitted say many of the survivors are in critical condition. Meanwhile, hundreds of people from Masaka and Kampala are flocking to Mukoko village in Bukulula Sub County to pay the last tribute Kirunda, who became famous not only as a driver but also for his unique celebration of the Valentine's Day. Kirunda and his wife had made it a custom to observe the Valentine's Day in a special way. The couple would adorn the valentine garbs and trek all the way from Masaka to Kampala, waving at people and enjoying every minute of the day.
