Three Men Gang Rape 18-year-old Woman

Gulu police are investigating the gang rape of an 18-year-old girl, a resident of Pece vanguard in Gulu municipality whose identities have been withheld by URN. The girl was allegedly ganged raped by three drunken men on Tuesday morning in Laroo Forest in Laroo division of Gulu Municipality.

The victim says she was returning from Unyama Sub County where she had gone to visit her grandmother. The suspect reported the matter at Gulu Central Police station on Thursday under CRB SD22/05/12/2013. She was immediately put on Post-Exposure Prophylaxis-PEP to mitigate her exposure to HIV infection.

The rape victim says she didn’t report the case immediate for fear of stigmatization and the reaction of her parents. Patrick Jimmy Okema, the Aswa Regional Police spokesperson says they are following up on the case to bring the suspects to justice. He however, faults the girl for not reporting the incident immediately to help place trace the suspects.

Just in October a young woman in Kyambogo Kampala accused 6 Indians nationals for gangraping her. Two of the suspects were arrested and remanded to prison. Sexual offenses including rape and defilement top the crime rates across the country. Mid this year, Dr Johnson Byabashaija, the commissioner general of Uganda Prisons said more than 60 percent of remand inmates are facing sexual related offenses.
